Our goal is to double our current capacity and accommodate 50 to 60 children and 10 teachers. We know the need is great because regretfully, we are forced to turn away more and more children each year. The plans call for a state-of-the-art facility which, in addition to the preschool, will provide a place for everyone to gather and be embraced by the Hawaiian language. We envision that this Family Language Resource Center will offer an array of amenities such as after-school instruction for siblings, evening classes for parents, inter-generational programs, and use of a multi-purpose room by other Hawaiian language-based groups.
After years of hard work, we received approval in March 1997 from the County of Maui for a 55-year, one-dollar-a-year lease on a 1.68 acre parcel of land in Central Maui. As happy and excited as we were, we knew it was just the beginning of a long road to follow. We now need to raise nearly $10 million for the construction of a new school and family language and resource center on the site.
To this end, parents, alumni, and supportive community members formed Nā Leo Pūlama o Maui, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit community organization to raise funds for hale hou (new building) and to continue to support Pūnana Leo o Maui.
